Ethan Ampadu has revealed that the most memorable moment from Leeds United’s first season back in the Premier League was the night their top-flight safety was confirmed — ranking it even higher than their famous victory at Old Trafford.
Speaking to LUTV, Ampadu said, “Definitely the game against Man United. I think not just for the players playing and the staff involved but as a club as a whole, to have not won there in the league for 40-something years, I could see how much that meant to people and to hear that was the standout moment for a lot of people around the city was amazing. But I think definitely that moment at the end of the season where we were all together watching the result that kept us in the Premier League. That was definitely the standout moment for us all.”
He added, “That was our target at the start of the season, to stay in the Premier League, and obviously that was the moment where it was fully done. So it was definitely a good evening to enjoy with everyone.”
Leeds confirmed their Premier League survival with three games to spare on Sunday, May 10, when Arsenal’s 1-0 win over relegation-threatened West Ham ensured their safety. The Whites eventually finished 14th in the league table, eight points clear of the drop zone, despite suffering defeat to West Ham on the final day.
The April clash at Manchester United ended 2-1 in favour of Leeds, thanks to a brilliant brace from Noah Okafor. Ampadu acknowledged that many fans still view that win as the defining highlight of the campaign.
