Manchester United Plan Surprise Return for Former Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as Backup to Replace £39m Star

Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back their former goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Wolves as a backup option to Senne Lammens for the upcoming season.

Lammens joined the Red Devils from Royal Antwerp last summer in an £18 million deal and has since established himself as one of the standout signings in the Premier League.

The Belgian shot-stopper took over from Andre Onana, who faced heavy criticism for his inconsistent displays at Old Trafford following his £47 million transfer from Inter Milan in 2023.

However, Onana has rediscovered his form during a season-long loan spell at Trabzonspor, where the Turkish club is now eager to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan stated, “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties. We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality.”

Reports indicate that Manchester United are demanding at least €45 million (£39 million) for Onana should he move permanently this summer.

Altay Bayindir, who served as Onana’s deputy and is now third-choice behind Lammens, is reportedly seeking a transfer to secure more playing time. Even though Tom Heaton has agreed to a one-year contract extension, United are still in need of another experienced goalkeeper to provide cover for Lammens.

According to transfer expert Alan Nixon, Johnstone has emerged as a potential target. The 31-year-old, who came through Manchester United’s Carrington academy, might be open to returning to the club after Wolves’ recent relegation.

Johnstone brings significant Premier League experience, having made 85 appearances across spells with Crystal Palace and Wolves. His current market value is estimated at just £1.7 million by Transfermarkt, making him a cost-effective option for United.

If the move materialises, Johnstone would become United’s second signing of the summer, following the confirmed acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano explained on his YouTube channel, “Manchester United have officially completed their first summer signing. The ‘here we go’ was given a few days ago, but now all documents have been signed between Manchester United and Atalanta for Ederson. The Brazilian midfielder is officially a Manchester United player from today.”

Romano added, “What remains is for Ederson to travel to England following his holidays, complete his final medical, and sign his contract. I’m told an initial medical has already taken place with Atalanta’s permission and everything went well. The agreement with Ederson has been in place for months as the player was determined to join Manchester United.”

He further said, “The clubs have now completed all formalities in writing. The official unveiling will follow soon once the final steps are done. All paperwork is signed, and Manchester United have secured their first midfield addition of the summer.”

Romano concluded, “Manchester United are not stopping here. They plan to add at least one more midfielder, and discussions are already ongoing behind the scenes. After finalising Ederson’s deal, the club will continue to strengthen that area.”
