Lautaro Martinez has expressed his determination to deliver his best performance at the 2026 World Cup, aiming to make up for his disappointing showing in Qatar.
The Inter Milan striker was part of the Argentina national team squad that lifted the 2022 World Cup trophy. However, Martinez openly admitted that he was not satisfied with his personal performance throughout the tournament in Qatar.
During the competition, Martinez struggled to make a significant impact and failed to score a single goal for the Albiceleste. Ironically, his goal drought was not due to a lack of opportunities. Instead, he faced intense criticism for missing several clear chances in front of goal.
The statistics reflected his underwhelming form. Across six appearances, Martinez played a total of 239 minutes, took ten shots—four of which were on target—but none found the back of the net.
His string of poor performances drew heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike. Fortunately for Argentina, Julian Alvarez stepped up, delivering an impressive display that included four goals and establishing himself as one of the team’s key figures during the tournament.
It was later revealed that Martinez’s struggles in Qatar were largely due to an ankle injury he carried throughout the competition. Despite the pain, he chose to continue playing to support his team’s campaign.
Now, the 28-year-old forward sees the 2026 World Cup as a major opportunity to redeem himself and erase the memory of his disappointing 2022 campaign. He emphasized that he is currently in excellent physical condition and ready to give his all.
“You all know how important Qatar was for me because of the injury I had,” Martinez told TNT Sports, as quoted by BolaSport.com. “Individually, I didn’t have the tournament I wanted. I also didn’t arrive in the condition I wanted. Now I feel very good. I’ll do everything I can to help Argentina defend what we achieved in Qatar,” he added.
In the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi and his teammates are placed in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
