Manchester City great Yaya Toure has embarked on his first journey as a head coach after being appointed as the new manager of Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava. The former midfield maestro, who spent the past five years gaining experience in various coaching roles, is now ready to take command and guide the Slovakian powerhouse into a new era.

A fresh chapter for the Etihad legend

Toure has reportedly finalised an agreement with Slovan Bratislava to become their new head coach, bringing an end to a long wait for a managerial opportunity. At 43 years of age, the Ivorian has been patiently building his coaching credentials since retiring from professional football in 2019. According to Sky Sports, this appointment marks his official transition into senior management, as he takes charge of a club that recently captured its eighth straight league title in the 2025-26 season.

This move follows an extensive period of apprenticeship across Europe and the Middle East. Most recently, Toure was part of the technical staff with the Saudi Arabian national team. His path to this point has also included spells at Tottenham Hotspur’s academy and as an assistant coach at Standard Liege, showcasing his willingness to gain experience at every level before taking the top job.

Champions League football on the horizon in Slovakia

One of the biggest attractions of the Slovan Bratislava role is the immediate opportunity to manage in elite European competition. As the dominant force in Slovakian football, the club consistently features in continental tournaments. Toure will have little time to settle in, as he is expected to lead the team into Champions League qualifiers almost as soon as he takes over. Slovan Bratislava, with a record 25 national titles, carries high expectations both domestically and in Europe.

While domestic supremacy has become routine for the Sky Blues, success in Europe remains the next major challenge. The club has recently found it difficult to make a deep run in UEFA’s revamped competition formats. Having lifted the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009, Toure’s main mission will be to leverage his vast playing experience to steer the Slovakian side through the demanding qualification rounds and establish their presence on the European stage.

Moving past earlier managerial setbacks

Toure’s appointment comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding his next step in management. He had previously been linked with several other coaching vacancies, including a potential move to Daring Brussels, which was reportedly delayed last summer due to issues at Ligue 1 outfit Lyon. The deal fell through when Lyon’s financial difficulties and temporary relegation forced owner John Textor—who also owns Daring Brussels—to shift his attention to stabilising the French club. Although Lyon later won their appeal against relegation to Ligue 2, Toure opted not to wait for the situation in Belgium to unfold.

Taking over from a club legend

Toure arrives in Bratislava as the successor to long-serving manager Vladimir Weiss, a club legend who stepped down after five successful seasons to take charge of the Slovakian national team. Weiss ended his tenure on a high note, guiding Slovan to their eighth consecutive league championship. Toure is expected to assemble his own backroom staff to sustain that momentum, with former Celtic and Swansea City coach Darren O’Dea being mentioned as a possible assistant to the Ivorian in the Slovak capital.

As a player, Toure was celebrated for his strength, leadership qualities, and technical excellence at the highest level. Now, all eyes will be on him to see if he can carry those same traits into the managerial arena. With a winning squad at his disposal and the challenge of Champions League football ahead, the stage is perfectly set for the former Ivory Coast international to make his mark as a manager.
