Chelsea’s promising youngster Estevao Willian has spoken candidly about the emotional pain caused by the injury that ruled him out of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad. The 19-year-old attacker was expected to be a guaranteed selection for Carlo Ancelotti’s team before a serious muscle injury shattered his hopes of representing the Selecao on the global stage.
The moment the dream collapsed
The young forward was poised to play a pivotal role for Brazil in the tournament hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, having been involved throughout the qualification campaign. However, a major setback during a Premier League match against Manchester United changed everything, leaving the teenager devastated as he learned that his World Cup journey had ended before it began.
“Playing in the World Cup is every player’s dream. For me, it was even more special because I was part of the entire process,” he told ESPN. “That moment was one of immense sadness for me. I cried so much in my parents’ arms, honestly, I cried a lot. In moments like that, you need the people you love around you, and I’m truly grateful for them.”
A diagnosis that stunned the youngster
Estevao recounted how he realized the gravity of the situation after the Chelsea medical team asked to meet his family to discuss his condition. The winger had suffered a severe hamstring tear — the most serious grade possible — a revelation that left him completely stunned during the medical briefing.
“When I woke up that day, I went to take a shower, and the doctor called me three times. That was the day he said he’d have the results. When I finally called back, he said, ‘Bring your parents along because we want to talk to them too.’ I already sensed something was wrong. Usually, they would just tell me directly if it was something minor, so when they asked for my parents to come, I knew it was serious.”
“The toughest moment was when I actually heard the diagnosis — that it was grade four. I didn’t even know a grade four existed. But unfortunately, it happened. Now it’s about focusing on recovery and doing everything possible to come back stronger.”
Feeling his absence at Stamford Bridge
The timing of Estevao’s injury was a major setback for both him and Chelsea during the crucial closing weeks of the season. He was unavailable to interim manager Calum McFarlane, who took charge after Liam Rosenior’s departure. His absence coincided with a challenging spell for the London club on the field.
The Brazilian also missed out on the FA Cup final against Manchester City, where Chelsea fell to defeat — compounding the disappointment of a domestic season that ended without qualification for European competition next year.
Dealing with the heartbreak of missing the World Cup
Missing the World Cup hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada was a devastating blow for a player tipped to be one of the tournament’s brightest young stars. Estevao, however, has now turned his focus toward recovery and the future. “But life goes on,” he said. “Now it’s about recovering properly and getting the right treatment so I can return as soon as possible.”
