Nicotine In Food: Consuming any tobacco product is dangerous for health. Tobacco is such an addiction that it is very difficult to get rid of it. There are 7000 chemicals found in tobacco smoke, out of which about 250 chemicals are considered extremely dangerous and about 70 of them are chemicals that can cause cancer.
Nicotine found in tobacco is one of the most addictive substances in the world. Now the question arises whether nicotine is found only in tobacco. According to the report of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), there are many vegetables which contain nicotine.
Which vegetables contain nicotine?
-
Eggplant
Generally brinjal vegetable is prepared and eaten in all the houses. Nicotine is also found naturally in brinjal and according to researchers, the amount of nicotine in brinjal is 100 ng/g. That means brinjal can contain about 100 nanograms of nicotine per gram.
-
Tomato
Nicotine is also found naturally in tomatoes. According to research, 42.8 nanograms of nicotine is found per gram in raw i.e. green tomatoes and 52 nanograms of nicotine is found per gram in cooked tomato puree. At the same time, it has also been found in a research that 10 nanograms of nicotine is naturally found in every gram of tomato.

Are these vegetables safe to eat?
After reading the report, the question arises whether it is safe to consume these vegetables. The quantity found is very less. If you compare it with a cigarette, one cigarette contains 10,000,000 to 12,000,000 nanograms of nicotine, that is, 1 crore to 1 crore 20 lakh nanograms. Therefore, if these vegetables are compared with cigarettes, the amount of nicotine present in them is very less.
