The England national football team played a warm-up match in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, facing New Zealand on Sunday (7 June 2026) early morning at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, United States.
England secured a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand thanks to a goal from Harry Kane at the end of the first half.
Despite dominating the game, that goal remained the only one scored throughout the match.
However, the win did not immediately leave a fully positive impression for the Three Lions camp.
In fact, Thomas Tuchel’s squad voiced several complaints arising from the match.
Among those raising concerns were captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Both players pointed out that the pitch condition at Raymond James Stadium was less than ideal.
This situation made it difficult for England to execute the tactical approach they had planned to display.
Fortunately, it did not become a major obstacle in securing the win.
At the very least, there were still some positives that could be taken from the result.
“The wind and weather conditions were actually quite good. The reason we are here is to adapt to the kind of hot weather we’ll be facing later,” Harry Kane told ITV.
“But honestly, the pitch condition was not very good. It was very difficult to execute the playing style we wanted to show,” he explained.
Aside from the subpar pitch condition, there were also complaints regarding how the match unfolded.
These remarks came from England head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel admitted he was puzzled by his team’s performance in this game.
He noticed that England played with a very different style between the first and second halves.
In the first half, the players relied heavily on long passes.
They also delivered frequent crosses when approaching the penalty box.
However, both of these approaches were not part of their training or pre-match preparation.
The players also tended to take many shots from outside the penalty area during the first half.
“I preferred the second half to the first. I think we played sharper in the second half, more aggressive both with and without the ball, and were able to create more chances,” Tuchel told Hindustan Times.
“There were some good half-chances and a few strong penetrations into the box.”
“In the first half, we often weren’t in the right positions and relied too much on improvisation. That slowed down our tempo and made counter-pressing difficult, because when we started to attack, we weren’t occupying the proper positions,” he added.
England still have one more friendly match before heading into the final round of the 2026 World Cup.
They are scheduled to face Costa Rica on Thursday, 11 June 2026.
Support for England
The Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Banda Aceh Regional House of Representatives (DPRK), Teuku Iqbal Djohan SE, has predicted that the England national team will win the 2026 World Cup.
Teuku Iqbal, who is also the Chairman of SKULL (Supporters of Kutaraja for Lantak Laju), the main fan group of Persiraja Banda Aceh, said he feels an emotional connection with the Three Lions as he is an avid follower of the English Premier League.
“I support England because I watch the Premier League almost every weekend, so I am already very familiar with their national team players,” said Teuku Iqbal, as quoted by Serambinews.
