Martin Baturina has rapidly become one of Europe’s most sought-after young players after a remarkable season under Cesc Fabregas at Como in Italy. The Croatian midfielder’s impressive displays have drawn the attention of several top clubs from the Premier League and Bundesliga, who are eager to test the resolve of the Serie A surprise package.
Premier League sides eye Baturina
The 23-year-old midfielder’s reputation has soared thanks to his creativity and technical brilliance in Serie A. Baturina’s ability to dictate play and unlock defences has made him a key target for some of Europe’s elite, with multiple clubs ready to make a move during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, two unnamed Premier League clubs are currently leading the pursuit, both prepared to table opening bids in the range of €50 million to €55 million. They are not alone in their interest, as Bayern Munich have also been monitoring the Croatian’s progress closely, viewing him as a potential addition to rejuvenate their midfield with top-tier youth talent.
Como set steep valuation to ward off offers
Despite the growing interest from abroad, Como are determined to hold on to their prized asset. The club’s management has made it clear that Baturina remains pivotal to their long-term plans, especially with a historic European campaign on the horizon. To dissuade potential suitors, Como have reportedly set an €80 million price tag on the Croatian playmaker.
The decision stems from Baturina’s tactical importance within Fabregas’ system. Viewed as an irreplaceable member of the starting XI, the midfielder is seen as essential for sustaining the team’s momentum and progress. Unless an extraordinary bid meeting their valuation arrives, Como are expected to keep Baturina at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
Fabregas focused on European ambitions
While managing Baturina’s future is a major task, Fabregas is equally focused on preparing his squad for the challenges ahead. Having guided Como to a historic Champions League qualification, the Spanish coach is already planning how to reduce the gap between his side and Europe’s elite clubs. The 39-year-old has consistently emphasised the need for continuous improvement after their meteoric rise through the Italian football pyramid. Since the club’s acquisition by the Djarum Group following promotion to Serie C in 2019, Como have achieved two more promotions to reach Serie A, culminating in a fourth-place finish under Fabregas in his second season in charge.
Reflecting on their achievement, Fabregas said, “Yes, the night after the Cremonese match, we celebrated with the whole team and staff. But by Monday morning, we were already back to work because that’s the right approach. Now everyone will go on vacation, but I have important things to manage. We must raise our level, our organisation, and many other aspects. It needs to be done immediately.”
Looking ahead to the next season
Como’s decision to stick to their €80 million valuation aligns with the broader vision outlined by the coaching team. Fabregas has confirmed his commitment to continue leading the Como project he initiated in 2024. Building what he calls a “masterpiece” means retaining top-level talent and ensuring the club remains competitive in both physical and tactical aspects.
“We had a long meeting with the president and the director about my future,” the former Arsenal and Chelsea star explained. “We’ve solidified the idea, and our focus is already on next season. I’m very happy here; I still have a few steps to take, and I’m learning a lot. We’re developing a strong mentality.” That mentality, it seems, is centred on standing firm against Premier League financial power to maintain Como’s impressive upward trajectory.
