Lionel Messi has the opportunity to end his career on a spectacular high if he manages to guide Argentina to consecutive World Cup triumphs.
The future of Messi has inevitably become a major talking point as he prepares to lead Argentina at this summer’s World Cup in North America.
Messi’s current deal with Inter Miami runs until the end of 2028, but the chance to secure back-to-back World Cup victories could serve as an ideal farewell for the iconic 38-year-old — a legend who also happens to be 38 years of age.
Only two nations in football history have successfully defended the World Cup title — Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962.
Sergio Aguero, who shares a long-standing friendship with Messi, has played 90 matches alongside him for Argentina. Their partnership dates back to their youth days in the under-20 side and includes winning the Olympic gold medal together in 2008.
Aguero believes that Messi will keep his options open regarding his future and anticipates that fans may learn ‘in a few months’ what decision the Argentine captain will make.
Speaking to Stake, Aguero said, “Leo will do whatever he feels is right.
“In a year, he’ll review his contract. If he feels good physically, is happy, and at peace, he’ll continue playing without any issues.”
He added, “Obviously, knowing Leo, he’s extremely competitive and hates losing. But he’s living in a beautiful city where he feels very comfortable. Many Latinos adore him, and he feels that love around him.”
Aguero, however, believes that one crucial factor will ultimately determine Messi’s decision.
The former Manchester City striker, who had to retire shortly after joining Barcelona in 2021 due to health issues, understands better than most how physical condition can influence such decisions.
Aguero explained, “I think everything depends on his physical state. Looking at him now, I think he can keep playing with ease.
“If I were him, I’d stay even if it was just for five minutes. But if he’s fine, we’ll know in a few months.
“After the World Cup and the MLS season, he still has one year left on his contract. I don’t think he’s worrying too much about what comes in 2028.”
