'As Old As 19?': England Media Raises Age Questions Over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Cricket Gully | June 7, 2026 2:39 PM CST

The impressive rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to hog headlines from around the world as the 15-year-old batting prodigy bagged his maiden India call-up on Saturday and has been selected for the upcoming tours to Ireland and England.

This call-up to the Indian side is another landmark achievement in the youngster's already meteoric career, where Sooryavanshi has now broken the record that previously belonged to legendary Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest male cricketer to get selected for the India senior team.

The teenager has earned this call-up following a sensational season in IPL 2026 playing for the Rajasthan Royals, where he finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer and scooped up individual accolades, emerging as one of the biggest stars of the season.

Even though the team selectors have included Sooryavanshi as a cover opener and it seems unlikely that he would get an immediate place in the playing eleven, his selection has already been the major topic of conversation in England ahead of the limited-overs tour.

India will play a couple of T20Is in Ireland, then will move to England for a five-match T20I series and a teenager representing India has already gathered excitement among cricket fans and pundits.

English Media laud talent, question age

Several British news media outlets have been covering Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the Indian squad and while most focus on his astonishing talent, questions have been raised about his age.

The Daily Mail acknowledged his amazing rise but also made reference to earlier comments made about his age:

"Of his exact age, no one seems quite sure. In an interview in 2023, he suggested he would turn 14 that September, which would make him 18 months older than the 15 years 71 days on his ESPNcricinfo player page. There have even been unsubstantiated claims he is as old as 19."

Most other cricket-focused British newspapers focused only on his batting prowess rather than his age.

Sky Sports, who will be broadcasting the Indian series to England have dedicated extensive coverage to the 15-year-old opener. Former England batter Mark Butcher was among the people who acknowledged his phenomenal talent: "Oh my god! This is an astonishing talent. I'll love to see him here." Butcher even compared his bat-swing to Sir Garfield Sobers' of West Indies.

Other English tabloids have celebrated the rise of the teenager calling him a 'wonderkid', with The Guardian mentioning how he was a '15-year-old IPL phenomenon'.

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan was also praising Sooryavanshi on the BBC:

"His strike rates are beyond anything that we've ever seen. He's hitting Jasprit Bumrah's first ball for six, Pat Cummins' first ball for six, Josh Hazlewood's first ball for six."

It is undeniable that Sooryavanshi has already won over a lot of hearts, especially in England and now that he's about to represent the senior Indian team, all eyes will be on whether the 15-year-old prodigy will be handed his maiden India cap.
