End of the Road for Shubman Gill in T20Is? BCCI's Firm Stance Sparks Debate
Cricket Gully | June 7, 2026 2:39 PM CST

Shubman Gill wait to get back into India T20I setup seems like it has stretched even more now, especially after he missed out on selection for the upcoming UK tour. On Saturday, the BCCI selection committee came out with India squad for seven T20Is, these are set against Ireland and England.

While Shreyas Iyer has taken over the captaincy role from Suryakumar Yadav, a young sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made the cut ahead of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. He will be listed as a reserve opening choice along with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, so yeah Gill is pushed further behind in the pecking order for this trip.

Under Iyer leadership, India will head to the UK for a white ball tour with multiple formats, squaring off against Ireland and England across June and July. After that, the Men in Blue will move their attention to the Asian Games, where cricket will run from September 17 to October 3.

Despite another solid season with Gujarat Titans, Gill kind of… didn’t manage to land a spot in the UK tour squad or the Asian Games squad. At the same time, 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from Bihar got a rapid promotion into the national side, which in turn kept pushing Gill further down the selection ladder a bit more, yeah.

It’s also worth noting, Gill had re-entered the India’s T20 World Cup 2026 conversations not long before the Asia Cup 2025.

Even though he improved his strike rate and went for a more aggressive, no-nonsense approach, he still had trouble keeping the batting consistent. Because of that, the selectors ended up reverting Sanju Samson back as an opening option and they also brought Ishan Kishan back into the frame once more.

Still, Gill left no stone unturned in his chase for a T20I return. His big IPL 2026 run really stood out, with 732 runs at a 45.75 average and a strong strike rate of 163.03, honestly. His being left out of both the UK tour and the Asian Games squads, did catch a lot of fans and analysts off guard. But a recent report hints that the BCCI might not think about him for T20I selection until after the 2027 World Cup, which is a long wait.

Also worth saying, Gill currently captain- leads India in both Tests and ODIs. Along with the remaining nine Tests in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, he is expected to slot in around 35 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup even starts.

As captain , Gill is likely to pop up in about 44 international matches across the next 18 months. The BCCI reportedly wants to sidestep overburdening one of India’s most crucial batters by tacking on T20I commitments to what is already a crammed schedule.

If these reports end up being correct, Gill might not come back into India’s T20I setup before the 2027 World Cup is wrapped up. In that kind of scenario, he would probably be left with only the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the IPL as stages to sharpen his argument for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

For now though, Abhishek Sharma , Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi seem to be a bit more ahead of Gill in the race for the opening roles in India’s T20I lineup.

With Sai Sudharsan and Prabhsimran Singh also making strong claims Gill can not afford any dip in form during future SMAT and IPL seasons. Any even slightly underwhelming performances could make his T20I return even more difficult, honestly it feels like that.

While his results in the shortest format have been kinda mixed, Gill still remains one of India’s most dependable performers in ODI and Test cricket, no doubt. The BCCI recognizes his real worth in the longer formats and seems to be adopting a sort of format specific plan to keep him fresh for big assignments like the World Test Championship, and the ODI World Cup.

At the same time, his absence from T20Is has kind of created openings for the likes of Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson to really settle in and prove something. If they keep delivering stable showings , then Gill might have a hard time getting selection, for the LA Olympics as well as the 2028 T20 World Cup.
