Ajit Agarkar India's chief selector has never shied away from tough calls. Over his nearly three years at the helm Indian cricket has experienced a mix of triumphs and heartbreaks. Despite winning three ICC titles during his tenure India has also faced humbling Test losses at home to New Zealand and South Africa.

However a selector's job first and foremost is team selection and many of Agarkar's selections have certainly signaled a clear long-term blueprint for Indian cricket.

The former India fast bowler was a smart cricketer and he has taken a similar approach as a selector always looking at the future over reputation and star power.

Tough calls and long-term vision

His most debated decision was placing faith in Shubman Gill over Sanju Samson in T20 cricket a move that though it didn't immediately yield success was eventually reassessed by Agarkar who proved that he could take a U-turn.

Ishan Kishan's recall for the 2026 T20 World Cup a decision that was taken in order to keep him prepared for the tournament was also proof of his willingness to rectify his decision and learn as he moved on.

Agarkar was also a part of some of the biggest transition decisions India has made over the last few years. Post the India tour of Australia in 2024-25 a radical overhaul in the Indian Test squad, which involved stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, was carried out. While head coach Gautam Gambhir was always at the receiving end of criticism from fans, none of these big decisions could have been possible without the support of the selection committee.

His focus has consistently been on the futureICC tournaments. His decision to remove Rohit Sharma as captain, despite him leading India to a Champions Trophy title, drew flak, but his vision was centered on building a solid Indian team for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

A similar thought process has been behind his decisions regarding T20 cricket. With global tournaments like the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics scheduled the selection committee's primary concern is always the players' potential for the longer haul.

Performance over reputation

However the biggest positive during Agarkar's tenure is his emphasis on performance. The former fast bowler's stance shows that no player is above the team and what's more important is what the players bring to the table.

Regardless of whether it is about senior stars or budding youngsters, Agarkar has shown the way to move forward based on what the future of Indian cricket demands. Decisions regarding veteran pacers Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar also hinted towards his future focused approach, where longevity and fitness are also taken into account.

Public acknowledgement is not something India selectors usually get but the performance-driven culture that Agarkar has been responsible for promoting has truly been the icing on the cake. It was because of his approach that the era of star driven selections gradually shifted towards merit-based selections where performance and consistency hold the highest stakes.

With the focus shifting towards the next cycle of ICC tournaments, Agarkar's influence on the development of Indian cricket can be termed one of the major factors impacting the side's future.
