India shines in World Yogasana Championship: History created by winning 5 out of 6 gold medals on the very first day, excitement in the country

Abhay Burman and Ritu Mandal won gold medal
Abhay Barman and Ritu Mandal of West Bengal started India’s golden campaign by winning gold medals in the traditional yoga asana category. In the senior men’s category, Abhay Barman won India’s first gold of the World Yogasana Championship by scoring 63.42 points. Indonesia’s Arkan Rianto won silver with 57.23 points and Uzbekistan’s Alan won bronze medal with 53.21 points.

Winning gold is a memorable moment of my life- Abhay
On his achievement, Abhay Burman said, winning the first gold for India in the World Yogasana Championship is a memorable moment of my life. Playing in front of the home crowd brought extra motivation for me. After this, in the senior women’s category, Ritu Mandal gave India the second gold by scoring 64.33 points. Kazakhstan’s Aizhan Kuanishbayeva won silver and Hong Kong’s Lam Nga Man won bronze.

Historic opportunity for players- Ritu
Ritu Mandal said that this competition is a historic opportunity for Yogasana players. It is very special for India to win a medal at the age of 20 after a journey that started at the age of 12. India’s only setback came in the Senior A men’s category, where Singapore’s Nathaniel Tan Leong Onn halted an Indian clean sweep by winning gold with 55.37 points. Tanzania’s Karimu Swafi got the silver while India’s Sumir Gnawali won the bronze medal.

Roshan Thapa gave another gold medal to India
However, India made a quick comeback and Ritu Thakur won the gold in the Senior A women’s category with 63.50 points. Nabila Sol Barraza of Argentina came second and Awor Saulinha of Kenya came third. In the Senior B men’s category, Roshan Thapa performed brilliantly and scored 65.67 points and gave India another gold medal. Mohammad Mamun Khan Babu of Bangladesh got silver medal and Daniil Rikov of Kyrgyzstan got bronze medal.

Jyoti won gold medal in twisting body
The day ended with India’s Jyoti Deurkar winning gold in the Twisting Body Individual Senior B Women’s category. He scored 46.14 marks. Oman’s Olimuthu Nawamani got silver and Japan’s Saori Kyuei got bronze.

Received support in competition
The World Yogasana Championship 2026 is being considered a major step towards establishing Yogasana as a global competitive sport. The competition is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of AYUSH, Sports Authority of India, Gujarat Sports Authority, Gujarat Tourism and Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association. India has fielded a 122-member contingent in this competition, which is participating in six age groups.
