A new era is beginning in Indian T20 cricket. Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from the captaincy and Shreyas Iyer has been handed over the command of Team India. The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has taken this decision keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming T20 World Cup. It was not easy to remove Surya from the captaincy, because he had recently made Team India the T20 World Cup champion.
Surya’s form became a major reason for the change in leadership. Former captain Rohit Sharma has openly expressed his views on this change. Rohit retired from this format after India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, after which Surya got the captaincy. Surya also made India champion. Now Shreyas has got the responsibility. In this way, the third consecutive captain of the Indian T20 team will be from Mumbai.
Rohit believes that playing for Mumbai is a big thing. Nothing is easily available here. In Mumbai cricket, things like captaincy have to be achieved through your performance and attitude and you have to earn the respect of people. Shreyas has all these qualities.
Rohit told the ground reality of Mumbai cricket
T20 Mumbai League brand ambassador Rohit Sharma on Saturday (June 6) narrated the ground reality of Mumbai cricket, which took Shreyas to this position. Rohit said, ‘See, playing in Mumbai and representing Mumbai teaches you a lot. If you ask any player who captained India or Mumbai before us, they will tell you the same thing. Nothing is served here in a plate. Captaincy is something that you have to achieve through your performance and attitude. You have to earn the respect of the people around you, and Shreyas has this quality in abundance.
IPL experience will be useful to Shreyas
Rohit said that Shreyas has captaincy experience in IPL and it will help him in leading the Indian team. Shreyas had taken Punjab Kings to the finals after making Kolkata Knight Riders the champions in 2024. Earlier, he had taken Delhi Capitals to its first final. Rohit said, ‘I am sure that he will have a great captaincy time considering the way he has captained his franchise in the last few years. The IPL experience will give him the necessary strength for the role of Indian captain.
