England Struggle Past World Cup 2026’s Weakest Side, Tuchel Disappointed Yet Satisfied

England’s national team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Zealand in a warm-up match ahead of the 2026 World Cup, thanks to a goal from Harry Kane on 6 June 2026.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel discussed both the positives and negatives from his team’s first friendly in the United States.

The Three Lions continued their preparations for the 2026 World Cup by facing New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, USA, on Saturday (6 June 2026) local time. England narrowly edged out their opponents 1-0.

The only goal of the match came from captain Harry Kane just before half-time. The Bayern Munich striker expertly headed home a cross from Djed Spence into the far post.

On paper, the slim scoreline might not fully reflect the gulf in class between the two sides. While England are among the favourites to lift the trophy, New Zealand are considered one of the weakest teams in the 2026 World Cup, ranking 85th in the FIFA standings—the lowest among the 48 qualified nations.

Tuchel admitted to some disappointment over his squad’s sluggish start in the first half but understood the players were still adapting to conditions and the heat. For him, other takeaways from the match were more meaningful.

The German tactician used the match as an opportunity for squad rotation, completely overhauling his starting eleven after the interval. He expressed relief that his team finished the game without any injury concerns.

“I’m not entirely satisfied with the result. I preferred the second half to the first,” Tuchel said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. “We were sharper after the break, more aggressive both in and out of possession, and created more chances.”

“In the first half, we drifted away from our positions and played too freely. That slowed down our transitions and made counter-attacks harder because we weren’t where we wanted to be when initiating attacks. That’s essentially the lesson from this game.”

He continued, “To put it in context, many of our players last played together in November—so that’s six months ago. We’ve only had four training sessions together and completely reshuffled the lineup.”

“We’ve never played in this combination or formation before; the goal was to give everyone 45 minutes on the pitch.”

“The pitch conditions made things even more difficult. I think there are no injury issues or concerns, but the surface was very uneven, making it hard to move the ball quickly,” added the former Chelsea boss.

England still have one more friendly scheduled before the 2026 World Cup begins. Harry Kane and his teammates will take on Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday (10 June 2026), a week before kicking off their tournament campaign against Croatia on 17 June 2026.
