On Saturday afternoon, a severe thunderstorm led to a partial collapse of a canopy at Kendrick Family Ball Park in Morgantown, West Virginia, resulting in several individuals being hospitalized. The incident occurred on a hillside known as Randy's Ridge, where the canopy was situated. During a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in Monongalia County, the structure was blown over, injuring multiple attendees. Reports indicated that at least three ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
MECCA 911 confirmed that the event was classified as a mass casualty situation, although details regarding the number of injured individuals and their conditions were not immediately available. Greg Carey, a sports reporter, described the scene as frightening, noting that the storm, while brief, was intense, with canopies and tents being tossed into the air as people struggled to maintain their footing.
Location Details Where It Happened
Randy's Ridge, a hillside overlooking the ballpark, had become a popular spot for fans to gather and watch West Virginia University compete in postseason games. This area had attracted thousands of spectators over the past week.
Game Delays Due to Weather The Game Was Already Delayed
Prior to the canopy incident, the severe weather had already caused a lightning delay in the game shortly after 3 p.m. Although play resumed less than two hours later, the storm had already inflicted considerable damage on the spectators on the hillside.
James Sanders, who was present near the tent during the collapse, recounted the experience, stating, “We were just all sitting there looking at the baseball field, watching the wind blow and stuff, next thing we know, we hear the other big tent on the outside moving, and it started pushing us, and then it was just pretty much everybody protecting each other. It was probably only 30 seconds, but it was just pushing us over the hill.”
