Germany’s World Cup hopes have suffered a major setback after young forward Lennart Karl was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a serious injury sustained during training. The 18-year-old Bayern Munich sensation picked up a significant thigh problem in Die Mannschaft’s final session before departure, compelling head coach Julian Nagelsmann to bring in a last-minute substitute.
A heavy blow for Die Mannschaft
The promising attacker sustained the injury just before Germany’s warm-up clash against tournament co-hosts the United States. Karl had recently underlined his growing importance to the national setup by starting and contributing an assist in a convincing 4-0 friendly win against Finland. To cover the sudden absence, Nagelsmann has called up RB Leipzig’s 20-year-old versatile midfielder Assan Ouedraogo to fill the gap in attack.
Nagelsmann expresses deep regret
Manager Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged that losing the teenage star so close to the tournament has dampened the team’s spirits. Sharing his disappointment, Nagelsmann remarked: “I feel incredibly sorry for Lenny.”
He continued, “It’s a huge shock for him and for all of us that he won’t be part of the World Cup. The only small comfort is that he’s still very young and will have plenty of tournaments ahead of him. We would have loved to have him with us.”
“With Assan Ouedraogo, we’re adding another player who, like Lenny, made a brilliant impression with us early on. He’s extremely talented and we expect him to play with confidence and freedom.”
Karl promises to return stronger
The Bayern Munich teenager shared his emotions publicly, voicing his pain at missing the chance to represent Germany on football’s biggest stage.
In his statement, Karl said he was heartbroken to miss the tournament, explaining that he had done everything possible to be fit for the World Cup. He wished his teammates success and promised to support them from afar, assuring fans that he will come back stronger than ever.
Ouedraogo steps up
Assan Ouedraogo joins the German squad after an impressive domestic season with RB Leipzig, where he recorded four goals and three assists in 19 Bundesliga appearances. The central midfielder, who has already scored once in his solitary senior international outing, will now have to quickly adapt to the squad before competitive matches begin.
Germany will wrap up their final preparatory match against the United States before opening their Group E campaign on June 14 against Curacao, followed by fixtures against Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
