In a match marked by Rafael Leao’s red card, Portugal managed to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Chile in their World Cup 2026 warm-up game.
The international friendly took place over the weekend, precisely on Sunday (7 June 2026) in the early hours of the morning.
This time, one of Europe’s football powerhouses, Portugal, took the field as part of their World Cup preparations.
Portugal hosted Chile at Estadio Nacional do Jamor.
The Selecao das Quinas came out on top, claiming a slim win over La Roja.
Both teams were reduced to ten men after Rafael Leao and Ivan Roman were sent off late in the first half for direct red card offences.
Despite that, Portugal managed to seal a 2-1 victory over their South American opponents.
The Euro 2016 champions’ goals were scored by Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes.
Chile’s only response came from a late strike by Lucas Cepeda.
Roberto Martinez’s side fielded their strongest lineup for this friendly, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Cancelo, Rafael Leao, and Bernardo Silva in the starting eleven.
This match also marked Ronaldo’s first appearance for the national team since November 2025, when he had been sent off.
Portugal started aggressively, creating an early chance in the 3rd minute through Ruben Dias’s header.
Joao Cancelo’s free kick found the Manchester City defender, who directed a powerful header toward goal.
However, Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux produced a stunning one-handed save to deny him.
Portugal continued to press, with Rafael Leao hitting the post in the 9th minute after cutting into the box.
Chile focused mainly on defending to withstand Portugal’s pressure through the first 20 minutes.
The hosts came close again in the 23rd minute through a long-range effort from Samu Costa.
In the 35th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had opened the scoring, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
As first-half stoppage time approached, tempers flared near the Chile corner flag following a clash between Joao Cancelo and Felipe Faundez.
However, it was Rafael Leao and Ivan Roman who received direct red cards for unsporting behaviour that sparked the altercation.
Both teams played with 10 men from that moment, and the first half ended goalless at 0-0.
In the second half, Portugal continued to dominate possession against Chile.
Coach Roberto Martinez made six substitutions, including withdrawing Cristiano Ronaldo, Francisco Conceicao, and Bernardo Silva.
Portugal nearly broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through an acrobatic overhead kick by Cancelo during a goalmouth scramble.
The breakthrough finally came in the 58th minute when Goncalo Guedes found the net.
A clever through ball from Ruben Neves released Guedes, who timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and score, giving Portugal a 1-0 lead.
In the 75th minute, Bruno Fernandes doubled Portugal’s advantage with a long-range strike.
Guedes combined with Conceicao before passing to the Manchester United midfielder, who unleashed a thunderous shot beyond Vigouroux’s reach.
Chile managed a late consolation in stoppage time when Lucas Cepeda scored a spectacular goal from distance in the 90+2 minute, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
Portugal 2-1 Chile (Goncalo Guedes 58', Bruno Fernandes 75'; Lucas Cepeda 90+2')
