Top 3 Players Dropped from India's T20I Squad Ahead of Ireland and England Series
Cricket Gully | June 7, 2026 3:39 AM CST

India's squads for the T20I tours to Ireland and England, along with the 2026 Asian Games were announced on Saturday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With some young prospects being given chances, a few established stars have made way from the T20I setup.

The major inclusion was Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain of the Indian side and Tilak Varma as his deputy. Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's spectacular season in the IPL 2026 earned him his maiden national call-up. Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav were some of the established names to make way for the newer generation.

Suryakumar Yadav Loses Captaincy, Gets Dropped from T20I Squad

The inclusion of Suryakumar Yadav in neither the T20I nor the Asian Games squad came as a massive shock. Yadav led India to their third ICC Men's T20 World Cup title recently and was in charge of the Indian T20I setup.

However, in the recent months, Suryakumar has struggled to be among the runs, except for a half-century against USA in the T20 World Cup 2026 and failed to create a major impact throughout the competition.

The run continued in IPL 2026 too, as he could only score 210 runs at an average of 17.50 playing for Mumbai Indians and registered only one fifty in 12 matches.

With the selectors aiming for a different direction ahead of the next T20 World Cup cycle, Suryakumar was not selected in the Indian T20I setup as Shreyas Iyer takes over the captaincy responsibilities.

Rinku Singh Pays the Price of Inconsistency

The notable exclusion from the team list was none other than Rinku Singh. The southpaw who arrived at the T20 World Cup with great anticipation was unable to justify the hype and lost his place in the playing XI during the initial few games of India's campaign.

Though he enjoyed a decent season with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL where he scored 295 runs in 11 innings at an average above 59, that was not sufficient to warrant a place in the team.

The selectors have probably backed those who have delivered on the international front consistently. With many players contending for the middle-order slots, Rinku needs to make his way back in.

Kuldeep Yadav Misses Out Post Poor IPL season

Another surprise exclusion was of Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist-spinner had been instrumental in the Asia Cup victory of India in 2025 and was part of India's T20 World Cup squad in 2026, but a disappointing season in the IPL for the Delhi Capitals, where he claimed 10 wickets in 12 games at an economy rate of 10.29 left him out in the cold.

The selectors have opted to include Ravi Bishnoi in the side as the specialist wrist-spinner in the squad. Supporting the wrist-spinner will be the duo of spin bowling all-rounders in the form of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

India's T20I Team Enters New Phase

India's T20I unit heads towards a new era. While certain established names like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah continue to feature in India's long-term plan the selectors also look forward to building a new core that can be present for future global tournaments.

This approach is underlined by the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the selection of Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma as the respective leaders in the squad.

The door is still not completely shut for Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav who could well make a comeback with a strong showing in domestic cricket, IPL, or future chances.

However, for now, the Indian T20I unit enters a new phase where the established big names of the past two years sit out in the waiting game.
