Shreyas Iyer is making a spectacular comeback to the Indian T20I squad as the new captain, just as everyone anticipated. The selectors have announced the squads for the upcoming tours to Ireland and England, and they’ve also included the exciting young talent, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Tilak Varma, who was in the running for the captaincy alongside Ishan Kishan, has been appointed as the new vice-captain. The squad also welcomes back Harshit Rana, who last played competitively at the beginning of February this year.
Iyer was the top choice to step in for Suryakumar Yadav after the decision was made to part ways with the T20 World Cup-winning skipper due to his recent struggles. Suryakumar has been having a tough time making an impact with the bat for India lately, and his IPL performance in 2026 was also less than stellar.
On the flip side, even though Iyer's last T20I appearance for India was back in December 2023, his stock has been rising ever since. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024 and has received glowing praise as a leader over the past two seasons while captaining the Punjab Kings.

His batting has also seen a turnaround during this time, especially as India clinched back-to-back T20 World titles. In 2025, he scored over 600 runs in a season for the first time in his IPL career and followed that up with 498 runs in the recently concluded campaign, which included his first century in his final match of the season.
Sooryavanshi's rapid ascent over the past year has earned him a spot in the squad, even at just 15 years old. In the recently finished IPL season, he delivered an incredible performance, breaking multiple records and sweeping the awards. With 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.31, including a tournament record of 72 sixes, Sooryavanshi not only claimed the Orange Cap but also took home both the Emerging Player award and the MVP award.
