Shashini Gimhani, Sri Lanka's talented ambidextrous wrist spinner, has unfortunately been sidelined from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 due to an injury, as reported by international media on Friday.
According to a cricket news website, the 17-year-old sustained a lower-back injury during training, which means she won't be able to join the team on their trip to England.
Although Gimhani has yet to make her T20I debut for Sri Lanka, she has been replaced in the squad by right-arm seamer Chethana Vimukthi for this major event, set to take place in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. It's worth noting that while Gimhani hasn't played in T20Is, she has represented Sri Lanka in three ODIs, all against New Zealand back in March this year.
Additionally, she has played a T20 match for Sri Lanka A, having participated in the Women's Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament earlier this year. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's 15-member squad has already departed for England on June 2, led by the seasoned batting all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu, who is gearing up for her 10th Women's T20 World Cup.
