PONTIANAK – The fever for the 2026 World Cup has started to grip football fans in the Equatorial City. The South American giants, Brazil’s national team, have officially released their squad list for the grand tournament that will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Under the guidance of seasoned coach Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil has assembled a luxurious squad that blends the experience of senior pillars such as Neymar Jr, Casemiro, and Alisson Becker with the explosive talent of young stars like Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.
Drawn into Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland, the Selecao carry a huge ambition to capture their sixth World Cup title. Their opening challenge will come against Morocco in their first group match on 14 June 2026.
PSSI Pontianak Chairman Backs Latin American Powerhouses
Brazil’s grand ambition has received positive support from local football circles. The Chairman of the Pontianak City Football Association (Askot PSSI Pontianak), AKBP Lely Suheri, believes that although the number of participants has expanded to 48 teams, the global football power balance will remain largely dominated by traditional strongholds.
“The 2026 World Cup is unique because it features 48 teams, the largest number in history. Moreover, it will be hosted across three countries simultaneously,” said Lely Suheri on Friday, 5 June 2026.
Although the new format opens opportunities for dark horses to spring surprises, Lely predicts that dominance will still belong to the world’s football hubs — Latin America and Europe.
“The competition will definitely be fierce. However, in my opinion, two regions will continue to dominate — Latin America and Europe,” he said calmly.
When asked about his favourites to lift the trophy, Lely confidently pointed to Brazil and Argentina as the main contenders, citing their deep squads and winning traditions.
“In every World Cup, these two nations are always among the favourites because of their strong history, tradition, and championship mentality,” he added. Even though he is backing Brazil and Argentina, Lely predicted that two European stars — Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal — could steal the spotlight during the tournament.
