Celtic have confirmed that Martin O’Neill will continue as their manager on a permanent basis after leading the club to a dramatic Scottish Premiership title win on the final day of the season.
According to reports from Sky Sports, the Northern Irishman, who guided the Hoops to the league crown during his interim tenure, has now agreed to stay on full time. O’Neill is expected to sign a one-year contract to remain at Celtic Park.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool forward Robbie Keane was also linked with the managerial role in Glasgow after leaving Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros earlier in the year. Discussions reportedly took place regarding his potential appointment, along with the possibility of O’Neill continuing in another position within the club if Keane were hired.
However, Celtic have opted to keep faith with O’Neill, who previously managed Aston Villa and Sunderland, as he prepares to take charge of the Scottish giants on a full-time basis.
The 74-year-old initially returned to the Celtic dugout last October, replacing Brendan Rodgers as caretaker manager—exactly two decades after his first spell in charge of the club. Although he departed soon after when Wilfried Nancy was appointed as Rodgers’ permanent successor, the Frenchman’s tenure was short-lived. Nancy was dismissed after a poor run that saw six defeats in eight matches, lasting only 33 days in the role.
O’Neill was reinstated as interim boss and went on to steer the Bhoys to a Scottish Cup triumph over Dunfermline, followed by a memorable final-day league victory that sealed the title. On the last day of the season, Celtic hosted league leaders Hearts at Parkhead in what effectively became a title decider.
Hearts, managed by Derek McInnes, were aiming to become the first non-Old Firm side to lift the Premiership trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen achieved the feat in 1985. However, O’Neill’s men won 3-1, ensuring Celtic claimed their fifth consecutive league championship and extended their domestic dominance.
