What are the driving license rules?
Regulations in India state that if your driving license's validity has ended, you must renew it within the prescribed timeframe. Driving with an expired license is considered illegal under the Motor Vehicles Act, and you will be liable to pay a fine.
Grace period and the right time for renewal
There is a 30-day grace period after your driver's license expires. If you renew your license during this time, no fine is imposed; however, a late fee applies after the 30 days have passed.
In some states, there is a relaxation period of up to 5 years, meaning you can renew it even after 5 years; however, beyond that point, your driving license could be cancelled, and you might be required to take the driving test again. Penalty Charges for Driving with an Expired License
The Government of India implemented Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, stipulating that driving without a valid license can attract a fine ranging from ₹500 to ₹1,000; however, the specific fine amounts vary by state.
