New Delhi: Pakistan is once again intensifying its activities in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. This time he has announced to hold assembly elections in Gilgit-Baltistan on June 7. India has immediately objected to this move and lodged a strong protest with Pakistan.
In these elections being held after six years, 33 members are to be elected for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. India says that Pakistan has no legal authority over this area, hence any administrative or political step here is illegal.
India gave strong reaction to MEA’s statement
In a statement issued on Friday, June 05, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Government of India has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan. This protest is regarding the so-called general elections to be held for Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
The statement clearly said that the entire union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an integral part of India. This also includes the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan. According to India, any step by Pakistan will not change its claim on this area.
The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that Pakistan should vacate all illegally occupied areas. India believes that Pakistan is trying to hide human rights violations, political repression and economic exploitation by making changes in these areas.
History of Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly
Pakistan created the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly in 2009, which has a total of 33 seats. This assembly has been working since then, but India never recognizes it. India’s stand has been clear from the beginning that Pakistan’s occupation of this area is illegal.
This dispute has increased at a time when recently India had objected to the mention of Gilgit-Baltistan in the joint statement of China and Pakistan. India had said that any statement by a third country regarding this area is meaningless.
India’s consistent stance
India has earlier also been opposing Pakistan’s administrative, political and constitutional steps in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Ministry of External Affairs says that these steps are not only illegal but also raise questions on the freedom of the people.
The government has made it clear that India’s stand regarding Jammu and Kashmir will remain the same in international forums also. Any election or constitutional change in Pakistan will not change the reality on the ground.
