- Vi and Meta’s new SMV technology enables password and OTP-free log-in to Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.
- As the verification process will be done directly on the telecom network, the risk of phishing and digital identity theft will be reduced.
- The new system will make registration, log-in, re-log-in and account recovery process faster and safer.
Vodafone India, one of India’s private telecom companies, has joined the tech company to launch a new network-based verification method called ‘Silent Mobile Verification’ (SMV) in India. MetaIt has been decided to partner with

Login will be possible without password
Network-based verification technology enables a password-less login method and also eliminates the need for users to request an OTP. Besides, the telecom service provider claims that the silent mobile verification will protect the user’s digital identity from phishing attacks and other threats.
On Thursday, telecom service provider and Mark Zuckerberg-owned tech company Meta introduced Vii’s new SMV technology in India. With the help of this service, Vi subscribers in India will soon be able to login to Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook by just entering their phone number. (Photo Courtesy – Pinterest)
How will the new technology work?
Meta’s social media apps with SMV technology will send a verification signal to Vi’s cellular network to verify authenticity. After a verification, users will be able to login to social media apps without password or OTP. If Meta’s social media apps fail to complete verification, the user will not be granted access to the social media apps.
Vii claims that registration of new users, verification of mobile numbers, login and re-log-in process, account recovery and authentication during security checks will also be fast-tracked on the SMV platform. According to the information received, this security protocol will work in the background.
These are the benefits of using SMV technology
SMV technology eliminates the need for users to manually enter their verification credentials. Also Vi subscribers don’t need to switch between different apps for authentication. Also there is no need to wait for the verification message. Because verification requests are validated directly by the telecom network. This network-based verification protocol is now claimed to offer better security. Because users don’t need to enter credentials and OTP.
