Andy Robertson has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer following his exit from Liverpool.

The 32-year-old Scotland skipper had been close to a switch to Spurs in January after losing his starting spot to Milos Kerkez under former Liverpool boss Arne Slot. However, the deal has now been finalised after his contract at Anfield expired, making him the first signing under new manager Roberto De Zerbi as the Italian plans a summer rebuild.

Speaking about the signing, De Zerbi said, “Andy is a player I’ve admired for many years. He’ll bring outstanding technical quality, experience, leadership and the right mentality to our side. He’s a proven winner at the top level over a long career and will be a major presence for us, both on and off the pitch.”

“I’m eager to start working with him and to see the positive influence he’ll have on everyone in the squad,” he added.

Robertson’s immediate attention is on leading Scotland at this summer’s World Cup, but his leadership will be crucial for Tottenham once he officially joins a team that narrowly avoided relegation last season and is now set for major changes.

In a short video message from Scotland’s World Cup camp, Robertson said, “I’m currently in America preparing for the World Cup, but I just wanted to say that I can’t wait to play for you all. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, playing at the stadium for the first time in front of you, and I’m already excited about next season.”

Robertson became one of the world’s top left-backs after his £8 million move from Hull City to Liverpool in 2017. During his time at Anfield, he made 378 appearances, won two Premier League titles and lifted the Champions League trophy, achieving nearly every major honour available.

Despite his success, he made only 11 Premier League starts last season. Tottenham had long admired Robertson, and a potential winter move fell through only because Liverpool couldn’t recall Kostas Tsimikas from Roma as cover, forcing the club to cancel the transfer.

Now available as a free agent, Spurs have moved swiftly to bring him in, with the defender officially joining on 1 July.

Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange expressed his delight, saying, “We’re thrilled to welcome Andy to the club. He’s an exceptional left-back—one of the best in Premier League history—and will strengthen our squad significantly.”

“His skill, character, and leadership have been evident throughout a career filled with competing for and winning major honours. Andy’s professionalism and dedication will be invaluable to our team’s development, and he shares our drive and ambition to return success to the club.”

“We’re excited for Andy’s new chapter with Tottenham and look forward to having him join us after the World Cup,” Lange concluded.
