Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of experienced left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his exit from Liverpool. The Scotland skipper will make the move to London this summer, strengthening Roberto De Zerbi’s squad after a tense transfer saga that initially fell apart during the winter window.
Spurs secure seasoned left-back
Tottenham have finalised the deal for Scotland captain Robertson without a transfer fee after the 32-year-old opted not to renew his contract at Anfield. Earlier in January, Spurs—then managed by Thomas Frank—had attempted to bring him in, but Liverpool halted talks when they couldn’t secure the return of Kostas Tsimikas from his loan stint at Roma. Robertson now heads to north London as a free agent, bringing to a close his illustrious nine-year spell with the Reds.
De Zerbi lauds Robertson’s leadership
The ex-Hull City full-back arrives with a wealth of experience and a reputation for combining passion with top-level consistency.
Welcoming his first key signing of the summer, Tottenham boss De Zerbi said: “Andy is a player I’ve admired for many years. He will add outstanding technical ability, experience, leadership, and a strong mentality to our side. He’s a proven winner at the highest level and someone who can make a major impact for us both on the pitch and in the dressing room.”
Lange emphasises his professionalism
Robertson’s time at Liverpool was filled with success since joining from Hull City in 2017. He made 378 appearances and lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups and two Premier League titles — the latter coming in 2025.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange commented: “Andy’s quality, character, and leadership have been clear throughout his career, during which he has consistently fought for and won major trophies. His professionalism and dedication will be vital for our squad’s development, and he shares our determination to bring success back to Tottenham.”
World Cup duty before Spurs debut
Before joining up with his new club, Robertson will captain Scotland at this summer’s World Cup, marking their first appearance at the tournament in over two decades and adding to his 92 international caps.
Once he returns, the veteran defender will face the challenge of rejuvenating a Spurs side that narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season. De Zerbi will count on Robertson’s elite mentality and experience to lead what promises to be a crucial pre-season rebuild for the north London outfit.
