Breel Embolo, the Swiss striker, has received the green light to travel to the United States, allowing him to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to commence on June 12. Although the 29-year-old was unable to join his teammates on their journey to a training camp in San Diego earlier this week, he is now expected to reunite with the squad shortly before the tournament begins.

The delay in his visa approval stemmed from additional checks mandated by U.S. authorities. Embolo was required to attend an appointment at the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday, where officials reviewed documents related to a legal matter from a 2018 incident in Basel.

Swiss Football Federation's Confirmation

On Thursday, the Swiss football federation announced that Embolo is anticipated to arrive in San Diego by Friday evening. According to a statement from the federation, "We have just been informed that Breel Embolo's visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening."

Visa Review Details

Before his departure to the U.S., Embolo's ESTA travel authorization was under review while his teammates had already traveled to California. He remained in Switzerland awaiting the final confirmation of his documents.

According to the Swiss Federation, U.S. authorities also requested court records related to a 2023 conviction for making threats, which resulted in a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year. Although the legal matter was resolved, it led to increased scrutiny under U.S. entry requirements prior to Embolo receiving his visa.

Embolo's Impact on Swiss Team

Embolo's arrival is expected to significantly enhance Switzerland's offensive capabilities as they compete in Group B alongside Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Qatar. Their first match is scheduled against Qatar on June 13 in Santa Clara, California.
