Maharaja T20 Trophy: 593 IPL Runs, 31 Sixes, Yet KL Rahul Goes Unsold—Here's the Real Reason

The auction for the upcoming Maharaja T20 Trophy delivered a surprising headline when Indian star batter KL Rahul went unsold despite enjoying a stellar IPL 2026 season. The Karnataka-based T20 tournament is set to begin on June 20, but one of the state's biggest cricketing names will not be part of the competition.

Rahul’s absence from the list of sold players raised eyebrows across the cricketing community, especially considering the outstanding form he displayed during the recently concluded IPL season. However, the reason behind his unsold status has little to do with his performances and everything to do with his availability.

Why Did KL Rahul Go Unsold?

KL Rahul's failure to attract a bid was not linked to his batting ability or current form. Instead, franchise owners were aware that the Indian batter is expected to remain occupied with international commitments during the tournament period.

Rahul is currently preparing for India's upcoming Test match against Afghanistan. Following the red-ball fixture, he is also expected to be involved in the ODI series against the same opposition.

After the Afghanistan assignment, Team India is scheduled to embark on an important tour of England. With a packed international calendar ahead, Rahul may also choose to take some time off to manage his workload and recover physically.

Because of this uncertainty regarding his availability, franchises were reluctant to spend money on a player who might not be able to participate in the tournament. As a result, Rahul remained unsold despite being one of Karnataka's biggest cricketing stars.

Rahul Enjoyed a Brilliant IPL 2026 Campaign

The auction outcome becomes even more surprising when viewed against Rahul's IPL 2026 numbers.

Representing the Delhi Capitals, Rahul was once again among the tournament's most consistent performers. Although Delhi failed to qualify for the playoffs, Rahul finished as the franchise's highest run-scorer and continued his remarkable record of crossing the 500-run mark in IPL seasons.

The right-handed batter amassed 593 runs during the campaign at an impressive strike rate of 174.41. His performances included several match-winning knocks and showcased a more aggressive approach than in previous seasons.

One of the highlights of his season was a spectacular innings of 152 runs, which became the highest individual T20 score by an Indian batter.

Boundaries Galore for the Delhi Capitals Star

Rahul's dominance in IPL 2026 was reflected in his boundary count as well.

Across the tournament, he smashed a total of 87 boundaries, including:

  • 56 fours

  • 31 sixes

His ability to combine consistency with explosive stroke play made him one of the most dangerous batters in the competition and reaffirmed his status as a key player for both franchise and country.

Prasidh Krishna Finds a Buyer

While Rahul remained unsold due to scheduling concerns, fellow Karnataka and India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna secured a contract during the auction.

Prasidh was picked up by the Mysore Warriors for ₹2.60 lakh. Like Rahul, he is also currently involved with the Indian team setup for the Afghanistan series. However, franchises were apparently more confident about his availability or potential participation during parts of the tournament.

Focus Shifts to International Cricket

For KL Rahul, the Maharaja T20 Trophy auction is unlikely to be a major concern. His immediate focus remains on international cricket, where he is expected to play a crucial role for Team India in the upcoming assignments.

With a Test match against Afghanistan, an ODI series, and a challenging England tour on the horizon, Rahul's schedule is already packed. The decision to stay away from the state league could ultimately help him remain fresh for the demands of international cricket.

While fans may have hoped to see him light up the Maharaja T20 Trophy, Rahul's priorities clearly lie with representing India on the global stage. For now, Karnataka cricket supporters will have to wait a little longer to watch one of their biggest stars return to domestic T20 action.
