There was little reason for alarm on Thursday night despite France’s 1-2 loss against Ivory Coast at the Beaujoire Stadium. The French side, known as Les Bleus, initially took the lead through Rayan Cherki, but the 2023 African champions turned the game around in the second half with goals from Guéla Doué and Amad Diallo.
The turnaround coincided with head coach Didier Deschamps making significant changes to his lineup. France introduced five new players at half-time, and by the final whistle, all ten outfield players had been substituted from the starting XI. The team will next face Northern Ireland on Monday in their final warm-up fixture before travelling to North America for the FIFA World Cup.
Analysts continue to regard Les Bleus as one of the leading contenders for the title, having reached the finals in the last two editions and lifting the trophy in 2018. Cherki, who scored France’s only goal in the match, addressed the team’s position and expectations in a post-match interview with TF1.
“This defeat is a small wake-up call that helps us stay focused. We are not going to the World Cup as favourites, but with the intent to crush everyone,” said the Manchester City forward.
