Spain continued their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Iraq in a friendly encounter held at the Riazor Stadium in La Coruna.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente opted for a heavily rotated squad, granting first appearances to Marc Bernal and Jon Martin while giving a rest to several regular starters. Ferran Torres opened the scoring for Spain in the 16th minute, capitalising on a precise through ball from Aymeric Laporte. Iraq found their response in the 27th minute as Merchas Doski produced a stunning curling strike to level the contest. Though Spain maintained control over possession for most of the game, they found it difficult to penetrate Iraq’s well-organised defence in the second half.
The outcome underscored the need for further refinement before Spain’s final preparatory match against Peru, which precedes their FIFA World Cup opener against Cape Verde on June 15.
