New Delhi: Taking a big decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made Shreyas Iyer the captain of India’s new T20 team. He has replaced Suryakumar Yadav. This decision has been taken in the recently held BCCI Apex Council meeting. It is believed that the selectors have made this big change keeping the future in mind.

Captaincy changed even after T20 World Cup victory

Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India successfully defended the T20 World Cup in March 2026. Despite this, due to his poor batting form the selectors decided to change the captaincy. This is the second consecutive year when the captaincy of the Indian team has been changed after winning a major tournament. Earlier in 2025, Shubman Gill was made the ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma.

New journey will start with Ireland tour

Sarpanch Saheb’s captaincy may begin with a tour of Ireland. India has to play two T20 matches in Belfast on 26 and 28 June. After this the team will play a five-match T20 series against England. The selectors now want to prepare a new team keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Why was Shreyas Iyer selected?

Shreyas Iyer has been rewarded for his brilliant batting and excellent leadership abilities. He has brought success to many teams in IPL. Iyer made Kolkata Knight Riders champion in 2024. At the same time, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings also reached the finals. His recent performance has also been excellent.

He scored 604 runs in IPL 2025, while in the 2026 season also he scored 498 runs. His aggressive batting and captaincy skills impressed the selectors.

Why was Suryakumar Yadav removed?

Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy may have been successful, but his personal form continued to decline. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he scored only 242 runs in 9 innings. Even in IPL 2026, his performance was very ordinary. BCCI now wants to prepare young leadership, so that the team remains in a strong position in the upcoming big tournaments. Under this thinking, new responsibility has been given to Shreyas Iyer.
