Thailand’s Phuket International Airport will switch to automated passport control gates on June 13 as part of efforts to reduce congestion during busy travel periods.

The move follows online complaints about long queues at immigration counters and demands for bribes for faster clearance, Bangkok Post newspaper reported.

Authorities have ordered an investigation into the allegations while pushing ahead with measures to enhance services.

According to Airports of Thailand, Phuket Airport, the second busiest in Thailand after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, has acknowledged concerns over lengthy queues and is working closely with immigration authorities to improve passenger flow, The Tiger reported.

Measures already implemented include better crowd management, deployment of additional frontline staff, and better scheduling of flights during peak hours.

Between January and April this year, Phuket received 4.9 million visitors, including 3.5 million foreign nationals.

The island reported a hotel occupancy rate of 81.85%.
