One position that Manchester City appear determined to bolster during the upcoming summer transfer window is right-back. The Premier League champions are looking to add depth behind Matheus Nunes, who has firmly established himself as a reliable option in that role. The main debate within the club seemed to be whether they would bring in an experienced player to compete directly with Nunes or invest in a young prospect capable of developing into his long-term successor. A recent report seems to have provided clarity on their approach.

According to BBC journalist Shamoon Hafez, Manchester City are preparing to target a young right-back in the coming months. Hafez further noted that Matheus Nunes remains Pep Guardiola’s first-choice right-back. City’s recruitment plan is reportedly centred around signing a naturally talented young defender who can gradually evolve into their future first-choice right-back.

Should City pursue a youthful option, two names stand out as potential targets — Feyenoord’s promising full-back Givairo Read and Atalanta’s emerging defender Marco Palestra. Both players are highly rated and fit the profile City are looking for. However, new developments suggest that the race for Palestra could already be nearing its conclusion.

Reports from Sky Sport Italia indicate that Inter Milan believe they are on the verge of securing Marco Palestra’s signature. The same report mentions that Palestra’s preference is to remain in Italy at this stage of his career rather than move abroad. Despite this, several Premier League clubs are said to have shown interest in the talented right-back.

With Marco Palestra seemingly leaning towards a stay in Serie A, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read now appears to be emerging as Manchester City’s main target for the position. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has once again reported that both Manchester City and Bayern Munich are closely monitoring Read’s progress. If Palestra does remain in Italy as suggested, Read seems to fit perfectly into City’s vision — a young, technically gifted right-back who can provide immediate backup to Matheus Nunes and eventually become the club’s first-choice option.

All signs point towards Manchester City prioritising the acquisition of a young right-back this summer. Based on the latest reports and transfer speculation, a potential move for Givairo Read could be on the horizon as City look to strengthen their defensive options for the future.
