Jose Mourinho appears set to make a stunning return to Real Madrid, though the appointment hinges on one crucial condition and comes with a far higher financial outlay than initially expected.

Current president Florentino Pérez is trying to sway voters by promising the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté and José Mourinho, while his challenger, Enrique Riquelme, is countering with bold pledges to bring in Erling Haaland and Rodri. Both candidates are ramping up their campaigns ahead of Real Madrid’s presidential elections, scheduled for Sunday, each offering ambitious plans to shape the club’s future.

Pérez, who called for the snap election following a perplexing press conference, reportedly intends to reappoint former Real Madrid manager Mourinho as Álvaro Arbeloa’s replacement. In a campaign video released by Pérez, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach is shown wearing a Real Madrid jersey and simply saying, “yes.”

On Thursday, Benfica officially announced to the stock exchange that if Pérez were to win the election, he “has the firm intention” of bringing Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabéu. The club also confirmed that the compensation package for the veteran coach has been set at 15 million euros—significantly higher than the earlier reported figure of six million euros.

Meanwhile, Enrique Riquelme has promised supporters that, if elected, he will deliver marquee signings such as Haaland and Rodri to strengthen Real Madrid’s squad.

Pérez, on the other hand, is focused on reinforcing the defence, targeting former Bundesliga centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, currently at Liverpool, as a potential free transfer signing.

Riquelme, undeterred, insists he wants to go beyond cost-free acquisitions. He revealed plans to pursue Manchester City’s star forward Erling Haaland, claiming the Norwegian striker has expressed an interest in joining Los Blancos, in conversation with broadcaster Antena 3. Speaking about midfielder Rodri, Riquelme clarified, “He has a contract with Manchester City, which we must respect. However, we would begin negotiations as early as Monday.”

Rodri, known for his composure and tactical discipline, could be the ideal player to fill Real Madrid’s defensive midfield gap. Riquelme confidently stated, “If I become president, he will play for Real Madrid.”
