Omar Berrada Commends Ruben Amorim for Key Contributions to Manchester United

After a challenging 14-month tenure as manager of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim was dismissed from his role in January this year.

The decision was largely justified, as under the Portuguese coach, the Red Devils managed to win only 14 of their 44 Premier League matches. Several key players also found it difficult to adapt to his rigid tactical approach.

Adding to the disappointment, Amorim oversaw one of United’s lowest points in recent memory — their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

A poor start to the 2025/26 campaign and a reported confrontation with Jason Wilcox ultimately led INEOS to end his tenure, a move many felt should have happened earlier.

Following Amorim’s departure, Michael Carrick stepped in as caretaker manager, and the 20-time English champions saw an immediate turnaround in form.

Under Carrick’s guidance, United climbed to third place in the league — their best finish in three years — and secured Champions League qualification with three matches remaining.

When questioned about Amorim and whether the club hierarchy believed sacking him was a mistake, United’s CEO Omar Berrada offered a measured response.

Speaking to the club’s media, Berrada emphasised that the former manager had, in fact, contributed positively in several ways, and that Carrick had benefited from some of the structural improvements Amorim introduced.

“I genuinely think Ruben deserves recognition for many aspects. He endured a very tough season last year,” said Berrada.

“He faced difficult circumstances but played an important role in raising the standards within the dressing room.”

“For that reason, I believe he deserves significant credit, and I am confident he will go on to be a successful coach. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

One of Amorim’s lasting impacts on the squad was his decision to remove disruptive influences from the dressing room, including sidelining Marcus Rashford before his departure and letting go of Alejandro Garnacho last summer.

Rashford continues to search for a stable club, while Chelsea are reportedly eager to move on from Garnacho — outcomes that appear to validate Amorim’s earlier decisions during his time at Old Trafford.
