France player ratings vs Ivory Coast: Rayan Cherki impresses but defensive lapses cost World Cup favourites

Rayan Cherki delivered a standout performance with a stunning goal, yet a heavily rotated French side failed to hold their advantage, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening World Cup warm-up fixture. Coach Didier Deschamps opted for numerous changes but still fielded a strong lineup. Despite flashes of quality, Les Bleus could not sustain a complete display and ultimately paid the price for defensive sloppiness.

France began with intent, asserting control early and appearing the more threatening of the two teams. Kylian Mbappe tested Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana with a couple of sharp efforts, forcing excellent saves. Adrien Rabiot followed his captain’s lead, narrowly missing the target after 15 minutes. Ivory Coast, however, looked dangerous on the counter, particularly through the energetic Yan Diomande, who troubled Jules Kounde throughout the evening.

The breakthrough came from Cherki, who created a sliver of space before firing past the helpless Fofana to open the scoring. France should have built on their momentum but instead allowed Ivory Coast back into the contest. Strasbourg full-back Guela Doue found the equaliser in the 53rd minute.

Deschamps made extensive use of his bench in the second half, introducing five substitutes at half-time and continuing to rotate thereafter. While France’s squad depth appeared formidable on paper, the substitutes made little difference. Ivory Coast’s changes, in contrast, proved decisive. Diallo, brought on at the interval, turned the game on its head with a composed finish into the bottom corner after a flowing move. The visitors maintained their composure to see out the result.

Although the significance of this fixture can be debated, as France were not at full strength and pre-World Cup performances are often hard to gauge, this outing was far from convincing. It was certainly not the tune-up Deschamps would have wanted before Les Bleus begin their World Cup campaign.

GOAL’s player ratings for France from Stade de la Beaujoire:

Goalkeeper & Defence

Mike Maignan (6/10):

Could do little about either goal. Produced a couple of neat stops.

Jules Kounde (6/10):

Engaged in an entertaining duel with Diomande and generally held his ground.

Ibrahima Konate (6/10):

Beaten by a through ball before the first goal but otherwise solid. Covered for Kounde well and completed all but one of his passes.

Dayot Upamecano (7/10):

Rarely troubled, as Ivory Coast seldom attacked his flank. Kept possession cleanly.

Theo Hernandez (6/10):

Had limited defensive workload but supported attacking transitions effectively when needed.

Midfield

Adrien Rabiot (7/10):

Put in a solid shift for over an hour. Rarely misplaced a pass and competed physically in midfield.

Aurelien Tchouameni (8/10):

Completed every pass he attempted, maintained tempo, and shut down central channels. An outstanding 45-minute performance.

Rayan Cherki (8/10):

Displayed his trademark flair, recording more touches than any teammate during his spell. Scored a goal of genuine quality.

Attack

Michael Olise (8/10):

Created three chances, drifted intelligently into space, and combined effectively with Mbappe.

Kylian Mbappe (7/10):

Looked lively and sharp, coming close multiple times. Appears in fine form ahead of the World Cup.

Marcus Thuram (6/10):

Had several attempts on goal but lacked precision. Not the most convincing audition.

Subs & Manager

Lucas Digne (4/10):

Struggled defensively on the left, repeatedly exposed. A difficult outing.

Maxene Lacroix (4/10):

Lost possession in the build-up to the decisive goal.

N’Golo Kante (5/10):

Produced flashes of class but couldn’t impose himself as Ivory Coast broke forward effectively.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta (6/10):

Deployed as a target man when France needed mobility instead. His role felt mismatched.

Maghnes Akliouche (7/10):

Showed composure and technical quality during his half of play.

Lucas Hernandez (4/10):

Failed to track Amad’s movement on the winning goal.

Malo Gusto (6/10):

Delivered a steady 30 minutes without offering much threat going forward.

Kouadio Kone (6/10):

Energetic and combative, created an opportunity and added dynamism to midfield.

Warren Zaire-Emery (7/10):

Impressed with energy and composure, making a case for more minutes.

Bradley Barcola (N/A):

Introduced too late to make a meaningful contribution.

Didier Deschamps (4/10):

Not the outcome he hoped for. Despite numerous rotations, France’s quality should have been enough to secure a better result. A disappointing pre-World Cup performance.
