The Indonesia national football team faces another crucial test in the June 2026 FIFA Matchday series.
Indonesia is set to host Oman at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Friday, 5 June 2026, at 20:00 local time.
This fixture is more than just an ordinary international friendly.
The clash between Indonesia and Oman serves as a vital preparation stage for both nations as they gear up for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia.
Although both teams failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Indonesia and Oman successfully secured their places in Asia’s biggest football tournament.
Therefore, the match in Jakarta is regarded as part of their team-building process and an opportunity to evaluate strengths before next year’s official competitions.
For Indonesia, this game is also an excellent chance to improve its position in the FIFA World Ranking, which is determined by results from international fixtures.
Currently, Indonesia sits at 122nd in the world with 1,144.88 points, while Oman is ranked 79th with 1,313.46 points.
John Herdman’s Key Mission with Garuda
The upcoming match against Oman will be another major challenge for Indonesia’s head coach, John Herdman.
Herdman took charge of the team following a coaching change in October 2025.
Since his arrival, he has been working to rebuild the Garuda squad’s consistency after an up-and-down World Cup qualification campaign.
Indonesia deserves credit for reaching the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
However, the Garuda’s journey ended after failing to earn points against Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Under Herdman’s tenure, Indonesia has played two friendlies with mixed results—defeating St. Kitts and Nevis 4–0 on 27 March 2026, then narrowly losing 0–1 to Bulgaria three days later.
Overall, Indonesia has won only four of its last 13 matches across all competitions, suffering seven defeats and struggling to find the back of the net in several games.
At home, their record remains inconsistent—one win, one draw, and two losses in the last four matches played in front of their own fans.
Despite that, Herdman remains optimistic ahead of the Oman clash.
During the pre-match press conference on Thursday, 4 June 2026, Herdman stated that the players had undergone five days of intense preparation.
“The final training session showed great energy and a positive atmosphere that we’ll carry into the match,” said John Herdman.
He also highlighted the importance of fan support at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
“A victory over Oman is our main target, especially since Indonesia hasn’t beaten them in 38 years,” added Herdman.
Head-to-Head Record: A Challenge for Indonesia
Historically, Oman holds a superior record over Indonesia in recent decades.
Indonesia did defeat Oman back in the 1980s—winning 2–0 in the 1987 King’s Cup and 3–0 the following year.
Since then, however, Indonesia has struggled to replicate such results.
In 2007, Oman claimed a 1–0 victory in a friendly match.
During the 2009 Asian Cup qualifiers, the two sides played out a goalless draw.
Oman later triumphed 2–1 in January 2010 and 3–1 in a 2021 friendly encounter.
As a result, Indonesia has failed to win in their last four meetings against Oman—a streak Herdman and his players hope to end.
Oman Arrives with a New Coach
On the other hand, Oman arrives in Jakarta with its own story.
Known as Al-Ahmar, the team did not progress beyond the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, finishing bottom of a group featuring Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Oman last competed in the FIFA Arab Cup in December, finishing third in their group and missing out on the knockout stage after ending two points behind Saudi Arabia.
Over their past nine games, Oman registered only three wins and struggled offensively, failing to score in five of those matches.
The team now enters a new era under coach Tarik Sektioui, appointed in March 2026.
The match against Indonesia marks Sektioui’s debut as Oman’s head coach, making their tactical approach difficult to predict.
Chance to Gain FIFA Ranking Points
Beyond team development, this fixture also carries significant implications for Indonesia’s FIFA ranking.
According to football analyst Hermann Baum’s FIFA ranking simulations, Indonesia could gain a substantial points boost if they manage to defeat Oman.
A win would earn Indonesia approximately 6.56 additional points.
A draw would still yield an increase of around 1.56 points, while a loss would cost about 3.44 points.
Such a gain could help Indonesia move closer to 118th place globally and possibly overtake countries like Togo, Namibia, Sierra Leone, and North Korea, depending on other FIFA Matchday results.
Kevin Diks and the Players Ready for Battle
Indonesia’s key defender, Kevin Diks, also expressed confidence ahead of the game.
He said that all players share the same vision and understanding of the tactics to be applied against Oman.
Diks believes the massive support at Gelora Bung Karno will provide extra motivation for the Garuda squad.
“With full backing from the fans, the team is confident we can end this long winless streak and secure our first victory over Oman in more than three decades,” said Kevin Diks.
Predicted Line-ups: Indonesia vs Oman
Indonesia is expected to maintain a three-defender formation.
Emil Audero is likely to guard the goal, with Justin Hubner, Jay Idzes, and Jordi Amat forming the backline.
On the flanks, Kevin Diks and Nathan Tjoe-A-On are expected to operate as wing-backs.
In midfield, Joey Pelupessy and Calvin Verdonk are predicted to control play.
In attack, the trio of Ole Romeny, Ragnar Oratmangoen, and Ramadhan Sananta are anticipated to lead the charge.
Predicted Indonesia Line-up:
Audero; Hubner, Idzes, Amat; Diks, Verdonk, Pelupessy, Tjoe-A-On; Sananta, Romeny, Oratmangoen.
Predicted Oman Line-up:
Al Mukhaini; Al Khamisi, Al Shaqsi, Al Ghassani, Al Ghatrifi; Al Saadi, Al Marzouq; Al Yahmadi, Fawaz, Al Aghbari; Al Rawahi.
Score Prediction: Indonesia vs Oman
Given the current strengths of both teams, this contest is expected to be closely fought.
Indonesia will benefit from playing at home in front of their supporters at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
However, Oman boasts a higher FIFA ranking and a stronger head-to-head record.
Additionally, with Oman’s new coach, their tactical approach remains uncertain for Indonesia.
Considering these factors, the match is likely to be balanced and cautious.
Sportsmole predicts: Indonesia 1–1 Oman.
