Manchester United’s chief executive Omar Berrada has revealed that the club has a “defined strategy” in place for the upcoming summer transfer window, stressing that their decisions will be guided by internal planning rather than external market pressures or agents’ influence.

Following last season’s successful recruitment campaign that brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens, Berrada expressed confidence that the squad can be further enhanced. Reports suggest that a £35 million deal has already been agreed with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, with additional signings expected in the coming weeks.

Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Berrada elaborated on Manchester United’s transfer philosophy. “I think the template of what we did last summer will be replicated. We have a clear plan. I believe what we saw last season is a good path forward for us — we want a blend of experience and youth, of players who have proven themselves in the Premier League and others who have shown strong performances outside of it,” he explained.

Emphasising a long-term approach, he added, “We will always act within our framework, ensuring that every decision benefits the club not only in the short term but also for the long term.”

Manchester United are reportedly close to finalising the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson, a move that would strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.

Berrada reiterated the importance of financial discipline in the club’s operations. “We have to stay disciplined — it’s straightforward. We know what our investment limits are, and we have to adhere to them,” he said. “It’s vital that we don’t let the market or agents dictate what we should be doing.”

Last month, the club confirmed Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment as head coach. The 44-year-old earned the role after impressing during his interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January. Under Carrick, United secured a third-place finish in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League.

Berrada praised Carrick’s leadership and composure. “I think he’s earned the right to keep leading the team for at least the next two years, if not longer,” said Berrada. Describing him as “calm yet driven,” he added that Carrick and his staff have shown the determination required to guide the team towards success.

“When we assess the squad and our objectives for the next two years, he brings the right qualities — the right mindset, character, and understanding of the club — to help us take the next steps on our journey,” Berrada added.

In addition to managerial updates, the club also confirmed that third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract. The 40-year-old, who has earned three caps for England, has made just three first-team appearances since rejoining United in 2021.

Heaton, a product of United’s youth system who has represented a number of clubs in his career, expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm. “It’s a huge honour to continue representing Manchester United,” he said. “You can sense the determination and ambition throughout the club to keep striving for success. I’m really excited to play my part in helping the team compete for the biggest trophies.”
