Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has reportedly received a legal warning from Premier League giants Manchester City following remarks he made regarding their star striker, Erling Haaland.
The controversy began on Wednesday night when Riquelme, who is contesting for the Real Madrid presidency, made bold claims during a television appearance in Spain. He stated that he would bring Erling Haaland to the Santiago Bernabéu if he were to be elected as the club’s next president.
Appearing on the popular Spanish TV show El Hormiguero, Riquelme even held up a Real Madrid jersey with Haaland’s name printed on the back, suggesting that the Norwegian forward could join Los Blancos under his leadership.
However, the gesture did not sit well with officials at Manchester City. The club, angered by what they viewed as the improper use of their player’s image and misleading comments about Haaland’s future, responded swiftly.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, and shared by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City made their position clear. The club stated:
“The stories coming from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are FALSE. There is NO possibility of this happening, and there is no contractual clause that would allow such a move. We are considering LEGAL ACTION for the use of our player’s image in this context.”
The English champions’ firm response underscores their determination to protect their players and reputation amid the ongoing Real Madrid presidential race.
