Manchester United’s chief executive Omar Berrada has shared insights into the club’s transfer plans for the upcoming summer window, outlining a clear and disciplined approach as the Red Devils prepare for another crucial season.
The Manchester club are aiming to build on their third-place finish in the Premier League, a result that secured their return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign.
Following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January, interim manager Michael Carrick steadied the team and impressed the board sufficiently to earn the role permanently. Now, the former midfielder is expected to play a key role in shaping United’s recruitment strategy moving forward.
Berrada expressed satisfaction with the club’s previous transfer window, which he considered a success, and indicated that the same model would guide their actions this time around. Ahead of the 2025-26 season, United added Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha to their squad — all of whom were well received by supporters.
“The template for what we did last summer will be replicated in many ways,” Berrada told the club’s official media. “You never truly know how a transfer window will end, but preparation is vital. You must have a clear plan, know which positions need strengthening, and remain flexible.”
He added, “Jason Wilcox and his recruitment team are well positioned to execute that plan. We’re looking to blend experience with youth — adding players who have shown they can perform in the Premier League, as well as talent excelling in other leagues. Every decision will be made with both short-term and long-term goals in mind.”
Berrada, who took over as CEO in July 2024, emphasised that Manchester United must remain “disciplined” in the transfer market. “It’s straightforward,” he said. “We have a plan, we know what we can invest, and we’ll stick to that. Sometimes, we’ll make an investment not just for the next two or three years, but for the next decade.”
Turning his attention to club captain Bruno Fernandes, Berrada provided an update on the midfielder’s future. Fernandes had previously admitted he thought the club might consider selling him last season amid interest from the Saudi Pro League. However, the Portuguese playmaker stayed at Old Trafford and is now entering the final year of his contract.
“With Bruno, we have an incredible captain — absolutely fantastic,” Berrada said. “Of course, we want him to stay. He’s had an excellent season on the pitch, but more importantly, he’s proven himself as a true leader. People don’t always see what he contributes off the field, and he deserves great credit for that.”
He continued, “Bruno has earned the right to continue leading the team for the next couple of years or beyond. He’s calm yet driven, and I’m confident he, along with his staff, will do everything possible to ensure our success this season, next season, and in the years ahead.”
“When we evaluate the squad and our plans for the next two years, Bruno brings the right qualities — leadership, character, and a deep understanding of the club — all of which are vital as we move forward in our journey.”
