Marc-Andre ter Stegen appears poised to part ways with Barcelona this summer following a disappointing loan spell at Girona. The experienced German goalkeeper, who has an illustrious list of honours to his name, is reportedly no longer part of the Catalan club’s long-term plans. A potential move to Ajax is now being discussed, with former manager Michel keen on reuniting with the decorated shot-stopper in the Eredivisie.
Barcelona ready to let go of their veteran keeper
After a frustrating loan period at Girona, Ter Stegen has returned to Barcelona, but all indications suggest his time in Spain is nearing its end. Reports from Diario Sport suggest that the La Liga champions have communicated clearly that the 34-year-old does not fit into their future setup. Manager Hansi Flick favoured the young and impressive Joan Garcia for much of the season. Ter Stegen, who joined from Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014, has made 423 appearances for the Blaugrana and even captained the team during his tenure.
Barcelona are now looking to arrange a permanent transfer to reduce their wage expenses, effectively closing a significant chapter in the club’s history.
Girona loan ends in disappointment
Ter Stegen’s short spell at Girona turned disastrous, as he managed only two appearances after his January loan move. A serious hamstring injury abruptly ended his season, dashing his World Cup hopes and contributing to Girona’s relegation. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann lamented the setback, saying, “Ter Stegen’s situation is tragic; it was his turn.”
His former Girona manager Michel also expressed regret, adding, “It’s unfortunate what happened with Marc. It’s been very difficult. It seemed almost impossible to bring him here, and we only got to work with him for two weeks.”
With his loan officially expiring on June 30, Ter Stegen now stands at a pivotal point in his career.
Ajax step up interest
A new opportunity seems to be emerging from the Netherlands, where Ajax are reportedly showing genuine interest in signing the German goalkeeper. The Amsterdam club, who have recently appointed Michel as their manager, are keen on reuniting him with Ter Stegen. The Barcelona veteran brings remarkable experience, having secured 20 major trophies with the Catalan side, including seven La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey crowns, and the 2015 UEFA Champions League.
Michel is said to believe that Ter Stegen’s vast experience and leadership would be a perfect addition to Ajax’s squad. However, the Dutch giants are keeping alternative options in play, monitoring other goalkeepers like Yann Sommer and Mark Flekken, while also showing interest in midfielder Dani Ceballos.
Future decision looms for the German star
Ter Stegen must now decide the next step in his career. Although he remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028, staying would likely mean spending much of the upcoming season on the bench. With Michel offering a key role at Ajax, the veteran—valued at around €4 million—is expected to negotiate an exit from Spain soon and begin a new chapter in Amsterdam before pre-season preparations commence.
