Javier Aguirre has been appointed as the head coach entrusted with leading the Mexico national football team in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Born as Javier Aguirre Onaindía in Mexico City, Mexico, on December 1, 1958, he is currently 67 years old.
Before venturing into coaching, Aguirre was known as a player who represented Club América, Atlante FC, and CA Osasuna in Spain.
He was also part of the Mexico national team from 1983 to 1992, including being a member of the squad that competed in the 1986 World Cup.
After retiring as a player in 1993, Aguirre began his managerial career with Atlante FC in 1996.
He first gained major recognition when he guided CF Pachuca to the Mexican League title in 1999.
This achievement earned him the trust to manage the Mexico national team in 2001, leading El Tri to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.
Aguirre’s managerial journey has since spanned across various clubs and national teams, including CA Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza, RCD Espanyol, Japan national team, Al-Wahda FC, Egypt national team, CD Leganés, CF Monterrey, and RCD Mallorca.
In July 2024, Aguirre was reappointed as Mexico’s head coach, marking his third tenure with El Tri.
Under his leadership, Mexico will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
In the tournament, Mexico is placed in Group A alongside South Africa, South Korea, and the Czech Republic.
Busy Schedule Could Increase Risk of Player Injuries
According to football analyst Adrian, speaking via Tribunnews on Sunday (31 May 2026), the tight match calendar could pose challenges for players due to limited recovery time between club and international fixtures.
He stated, “In my opinion, this situation increases the risk of player injuries. Hopefully, no one gets injured during the tournament, as that would affect team strength and the overall quality of competition.”
