There is intense activity these days in the political corridors of West Bengal, where Trinamool Congress is facing setbacks one after the other. Just a day after the resignation of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Krishna Chakraborty has also submitted his resignation from his post, leading to a political upheaval in the state. The development, which took place on Thursday afternoon, has posed a double challenge for the Trinamool Congress as it has resulted in the party losing control of two important municipal corporations of Kolkata and Bidhannagar. It is noteworthy that Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is located in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata.
The resignation letter was submitted citing personal reasons, but the inner pain was clearly exposed. Mayor Krishna Chakraborty announced his resignation from the post by submitting his resignation letter to the Commissioner of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation on Thursday afternoon. According to sources, he has also sent a copy of his resignation letter to State Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul and the Secretary of the concerned department. While leaving the office, Krishna Chakraborty clarified that his decision was motivated by purely personal reasons. But, later his inner pain was clearly exposed, which has raised many questions in the political circles.
Expressing her anguish, she said that she felt unable to act as per her wish. He alleged that board meetings were not being held regularly, councilors were not present, and officials were always busy. In such a situation, she could not turn away from her responsibilities towards the public and could not deceive them. This statement of Krishna Chakraborty has clearly exposed the ongoing internal strife and administrative inefficiency within the municipal corporations, raising serious questions on the functioning of the Trinamool Congress.
Krishna Chakraborty’s tenure was about eight months left.
Krishna Chakraborty’s current tenure still had about eight months left. He had rendered his valuable services as the Mayor of Bidhannagar in two periods, from the year 2019 to 2022 and subsequently from the year 2022 to June 4, 2026. In emotional moments, she firmly said that she will continue to serve the public as a councilor like she did in the last sixteen years. It is clear from her statement that even though she has stepped down from the post of Mayor, she intends to continue political activism.
BJP’s attack after Krishna Chakraborty’s resignation
After this resignation of Krishna Chakraborty, the opposition parties have launched a scathing attack, due to which the political temperature has increased further. BJP MLA from Bidhannagar and state government minister Sharadwat Mukherjee has made serious allegations while taunting on this occasion. He said, ‘She was sitting on the throne of money. I have got information about eighteen-nineteen properties of his in Bidhannagar. Even before those assets were revealed, they hid them out of shame. These allegations by the BJP have put the Trinamool Congress on the defensive and further intensified the debate on the real reasons behind these resignations.
It is noteworthy that after the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the state assembly elections, a series of resignation letters of TMC public representatives are being seen in various municipalities. Earlier, Mayor Ram Chakraborty of Chandannagar Municipal Corporation of Hooghly district had also resigned from his post, as a result of which an administrator had to be appointed there. On Wednesday itself, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim had also resigned from his post with the permission of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. These consecutive resignations clearly reflect the internal turmoil going on within the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the declining influence of the party, which has brought a new twist in the political situation in the state.
