FIFA World Cup 2026 Key Highlights: The FIFA World Cup, often called the grand festival of football, is set to begin on 11 June 2026, with the final scheduled for 19 July. The tournament will span 39 days of intense global competition.
The FIFA Council has revealed that the winning team of the 2026 World Cup will receive prize money of ₹418 crore. The runner-up will earn ₹276 crore, while the team finishing in third place will get ₹242 crore. Each team eliminated at the group stage will still take home ₹75 crore.
What Will Be Seen for the First Time in FIFA World Cup 2026?
- For the first time in history, 48 teams will compete in the FIFA World Cup 2026. They will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. Previously, only 32 teams participated in the tournament.
- This edition will feature a record-breaking 104 matches. The eventual champion will now need to play eight matches instead of the earlier seven.
- The 2026 edition will also mark the first time that three nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico – will jointly host the FIFA World Cup. The maximum number of hosts before this was two, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted in 2002. As a result, for the first time, there will be three separate opening ceremonies, each showcasing the unique culture of their respective host country.
- Four nations – Uzbekistan, Jordan, Curaçao, and Cape Verde – have qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the very first time.
- In another first, the knockout stage will now include a ‘Round of 32’. Along with the top two teams from each group, the eight best third-placed teams will also progress to this stage.
- A new substitution rule will be implemented: once a player is called to be substituted, they must exit through the nearest boundary line within 10 seconds of the fourth official raising the board. If the player fails to comply, the incoming substitute cannot enter the field for one minute, compelling the team to play with 10 players temporarily.
- If a goalkeeper suffers an injury during play, neither the opposing players nor teammates will be allowed to leave the field to consult their coach for tactical discussions.
- In the event of an on-field confrontation, any player who covers their face with a hand, sleeve, or shirt while speaking will be shown a direct red card and sent off. This rule aims to eliminate the possibility of concealing racial or obscene remarks.
- If a player leaves the pitch in protest of a referee’s decision or if a team’s manager or coach encourages such an action, those involved will immediately receive a red card.
- For the first time ever, every match will feature a mandatory three-minute hydration break around the 23rd minute of each half, regardless of weather or stadium temperature.
- Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will also see an expanded role. It will now be used to correct errors in three additional scenarios: wrongly issued second yellow cards that lead to a red card, mistaken player identity, and incorrect corner kick decisions.
