Shillong, Jun 4: On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), where leaders from the eight northeastern states committed to enhancing the region's strength and prosperity while discussing the North East Vision Plan 2047.
The gathering included governors, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and senior officials from the Northeast.
According to a social media update from the NEC, "Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya M Scindia, governors, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and senior officials convened ahead of the plenary discussions."
All leaders reiterated their shared dedication to the region's growth, connectivity, and prosperity.
Union Minister Scindia emphasized that the leaders are united in their mission to build a "stronger and more prosperous" Northeast.
An official statement revealed that representatives from all eight northeastern states engaged in discussions regarding the North East Vision Plan 2047 and identified key priorities for regional development.
"The plenary session reviewed the advancements made by the Chief Minister High-Level Task Forces established for critical sectors of regional development," the DoNER Ministry noted in a social media post.
The session also evaluated significant initiatives from the DoNER ministry, including updates on major schemes, outcomes from the North East Investment Summit, and the Bankers' Conclave.
Leaders examined youth-centric initiatives, tourism and logistics efforts, and the region's unique selling propositions.
Presentations covered various topics such as tourism, agriculture, investment promotion, self-sufficiency in milk, eggs, fish, and meat production, sports development, economic corridor initiatives, infrastructure, connectivity, and traditional crafts.
"These discussions are anticipated to promote coordinated actions among states and stakeholders to achieve common development objectives," an official stated.
The North East Vision Plan 2047 aims to create a long-term strategy for transforming the region into a dynamic center of economic growth, connectivity, innovation, sustainability, and cultural richness by the centenary of India's independence.
Earlier, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma extended a warm welcome to Shah in Shillong for the meeting.
"Happy to welcome Hon'ble Union Home Minister and Chairman of the North Eastern Council, Shri @AmitShah ji to Shillong for the 73rd NEC Plenary Session," he remarked.
Before the main session, a pre-Plenary meeting took place, gathering senior officials from the Indian government and all eight Northeastern states on Wednesday.
This meeting included chief secretaries, state planning secretaries, senior officials from the DoNER ministry, NEC officials, and other key stakeholders.
The North Eastern Council, established under the North Eastern Council Act of 1971, acts as the primary regional planning body for the Northeast, playing a crucial role in promoting coordinated development and enhancing cooperative federalism in the area.
It serves as the nodal agency for the economic and social advancement of the region, which encompasses Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
