007 First Light sequels are on the cards, but they might not be by IO Interactive

IO Interactive's latest title, 007 First Light, has achieved roaring success in its first week having sold over 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours. Such success for an IP as huge as James Bond would seemingly lay the groundwork for future sequels - but it doesn't look like IO Interactive will have much involvement if they do happen.

That's according to the general manager of gaming at Amazon, who recently disclosed to Polygon that, if a 007 First Light sequel does happen, it will likely come from an Amazon Game Studio.

The reason for this is due to how the rights of the James Bond IP have moved around in the last few years. Back in 2022, Amazon acquired MGM Studios for $8.5 billion, picking up the rights to the British spy in the process.

However, IO Interactive were still able to make 007 First Light because the project had been greenlit by MGM ahead of the acquisition. Now that Bond is firmly within Amazon's wheelhouse, it will be looking to make future projects with its own studios going forward.

"We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP," Jeff Gattis tells Polygon. "But that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done."

Gattis is pretty clear about how Amazon is likely to approach a sequel in the future, saying that they will be "done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios."

For those who've played 007 First Light, this likely won't fill them with hope. A lot of what makes First Light so good is that IO Interactive's expertise with the Hitman series shines through in its adaptation.

Amazon has spent the best part of the last decade trying to break into the gaming space with varied success. Titles like Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty and New World have all come and gone with each of them failing to find an audience willing to stick them out for the long run.

The upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be published by Amazon Game Studios, although it's in development at Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog.

Gamers are already voicing their skepticism about Amazon developing a sequel to 007 First Light in-house. "Yeah, there's no way they can match IO in quality," reads one Reddit comment.

Another adds: "I feel bad for IO, to put so much effort into this only to instantly lose the licence."

At the moment, Amazon is yet to confirm whether a sequel to First Light is in the works. However, the ending of the game does leave plenty of room for the story to continue.

Would you play a 007 First Light sequel if it wasn't made by IO Interactive?
