Michael Carrick is targeting five new signings this summer as Manchester United prepare for their return to the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils are close to completing their first signing of the transfer window after reaching an agreement with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson.

The Brazilian international is expected to join United for a fee of around £35 million, making him Carrick’s first signing since becoming the club’s permanent head coach.

Carrick is planning an ambitious summer of recruitment after guiding United back into Europe’s top competition. Ederson is believed to be the first of five planned arrivals, with the primary focus on strengthening the midfield, left-back, and centre-forward positions.

As per reports from The Times, United aim to bolster their midfield further by adding two more players alongside defensive midfielder Ederson.

The club have been heavily linked with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and are set to intensify their pursuit following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.

United are also considering a move for Newcastle United’s left-back Lewis Hall. Although Luke Shaw enjoyed a consistent campaign, there are concerns about the 30-year-old’s ability to manage the additional workload of European football due to his previous injury issues.

Hall is viewed as both competition for Shaw and a long-term successor. Newcastle are keen to retain the 21-year-old, but may be open to a significant offer after missing out on European qualification.

The final piece of Carrick’s transfer puzzle will be a new centre-forward to compete with Benjamin Sesko. With Bryan Mbeumo often deployed as a makeshift striker last season, United want to bring in a recognised number nine to strengthen their attacking options.
