This Sunday marks the commencement of one of the largest cycling initiatives in India. Union and State ministers will actively participate in the "Sundays on Cycle" events taking place in various cities across the nation.
Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, will be present in Ranchi, while West Bengal's new Sports Minister, Nisith Pramanik, will join in Kolkata. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh has encouraged residents of Punjab to take part in this movement. In Delhi, popular film actor Vikrant Massey is also set to participate, as stated in a press release from the Sports Ministry.
Growing Participation Under the FIT India Campaign
Over 350,000 registrations have been recorded for cycling this Sunday under the FIT India campaign, all achieved without any advertising. Following the Prime Minister's call to action, there has been a noticeable increase in public interest in cycling, evident from the substantial turnout for Sundays on Cycle. This initiative is transforming from a simple public participation campaign into a genuine people's movement.
Cycling as a Sustainable Practice
Cycling is evolving beyond just a means of transport; individuals can now earn Carbon Credits through their cycling activities. Plans are underway to implement a feature in the FIT India App that will allow users to redeem their accumulated Carbon Credits.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Transport in Educational Institutions Vehicle-Free Campus Initiative
The FIT India Vehicle-Free Campus Initiative aims to encourage educational institutions to advocate for walking, cycling, and other environmentally friendly transport options on their campuses. The goal is to decrease reliance on petrol and diesel, reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, and foster a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Vehicle-Free Campus Certification
To acknowledge and promote these efforts, FIT India has launched the Vehicle-Free Campus Certification. This certification will be granted to institutions that implement sustainable mobility practices and effectively minimize vehicular traffic on their campuses. There are two certification categories: Cycle-Friendly Campus, which recognizes campuses that actively promote cycling and significantly reduce motor vehicle use, and Cycle-Only Campus, where mobility is primarily or entirely reliant on cycling and other non-motorized transport.
Numerous institutions across the country, including KIIT University, Shiv Nadar University, National Defence Academy, and Indian Military Academy, have made commendable strides in promoting cycling on their campuses. These institutions will be honored on June 7 for their exceptional contributions.
Inspiring a Greener Future
Through this certification and recognition initiative, FIT India aims to motivate educational institutions nationwide to adopt environmentally friendly transportation solutions, collectively working towards a fitter, greener, and more sustainable India.
